Abdominal Liposuction San Antonio
Liposuction of the abdomen is the most requested body area for liposuction in San Antonio. Both the upper and lower areas of the abdomen can be treated with liposuction versus a tummy tuck, and for some patients, only the upper or the lower abdominal areas require suctioning for a good result. The goal of abdominal liposuction is to create a flatter, more pleasing silhouette and a more flattering drape for clothing.
As we age, the abdomen begins to accumulate fat deposits. This can be a natural tendency in the years near menopause. But, even younger women, especially those who have been pregnant, may develop an abdominal bulge and increase in volume. Abdominal liposuction can trim and smooth fat bulges that accumulate between the skin and the abdominal muscles. When combined with SlimLipo™, skin laxity can be improved, and a more youthful appearance restored.
The shape of the abdomen is also greatly influenced by genetics. Even relatively young women who eat right and exercise can have abdomens that do not respond to their efforts. These genetically determined problem areas can be treated with liposuction when a woman’s best efforts haven’t been successful.
Another factor that is determined by both age and genetics is the shape of the abdominal muscle wall. Some women are fortunate to have a very flat muscle and all of their accumulated fat is located only between the muscle and the skin. This is the ideal circumstance for a good result with liposuction. For some, however, there is fat stored behind the muscle in the interior of the abdomen where the organs are located. This fat, referred to as visceral fat, and is not removable with liposuction. For many women, especially near menopause, there is fat accumulation in both of the locations. During a consultation the location of the abdominal fat can be determined. Women with even a small degree of fat located in the subcutaneous (the zone between the muscle and the skin) area may find liposuction rewarding if their best efforts haven’t been able to work it off.
Abdominal Liposuction vs. “Tummy Tuck”
We get many calls in our San Antonio office from women who are confused about the difference between abdominal liposuction and a “tummy tuck”, or abdominoplasty, as the procedure is called. Liposuction is the procedure of choice if there is subcutaneous fat present. A tummy tuck is only indicated if there is excessively loose skin, or if the abdominal muscle has been damaged with pregnancy or surgery and is no longer responsive to toning with exercise. Even when there is loose skin present, many women are pleasantly surprised to learn that their skin can tighten very well after liposuction, avoiding the more risky, invasive and longer-healing tummy tuck procedure.
Even if a tummy tuck is being considered, it is better to separate the tummy tuck and liposuction into two separate procedures to reduce the risks associated with combining the procedures. The medical literature has shown that risks are higher with combined procedures. Many times patients who thought they would need an abdominoplasty after liposuction decide not to do it after they see the results of liposuction. Surgeons who may not be familiar with the benefits of liposuction for skin tightening may recommend an abdominoplasty, so it’s a good idea to get a second opinion if the more serious abdominoplasty procedure isn’t very appealing.
