Do You Have Fat on Your Abdomen or Waist That You Would Like to Have Removed?

The goal of abdominal liposuction is to create a flatter, more pleasing silhouette and a more flattering drape for clothing. Abdominal liposuction can trim and smooth fat bulges that accumulate between the skin and the abdominal muscles. Both the upper and lower areas of the abdomen can be treated with liposuction, and for some patients, only the upper or the lower abdominal areas require suctioning for a good result.

Candidates for Abdominal Liposuction

As we age, the abdomen begins to accumulate fat deposits. This can be a natural tendency in the years near menopause. But, even younger women, especially those who have been pregnant, may develop an abdominal bulge and increase in volume.

The shape of the abdomen is also greatly influenced by genetics. Even relatively young women who eat right and exercise can have abdomens that do not respond to their efforts. These genetically determined problem areas could be treated with liposuction when a woman’s best efforts haven’t been successful.

Another factor that is determined by both age and genetics is the shape of the abdominal muscle wall. Some women are fortunate to have a very flat muscle and all of their accumulated fat is located only between the muscle and the skin. This is the ideal circumstance for a good result with liposuction. For some, however, there is fat stored behind the muscle in the interior of the abdomen where the organs are located.

How Does It Work?

This surgical procedure works by numbing the treatment area with tumescent anesthesia so that the patient will feel no pain or discomfort. Our practice is also one of the only ones in the area that offers patients ProNox, a special type of nitrous oxide (also known as “laughing gas”) so that while patients are awake for their procedure, they are extremely relaxed and pleasantly unconcerned. After numbing and if chosen, ProNox have taken effect, Dr. Finder makes small incisions in the treatment area, and using a small tube (called a cannula) in a back and forth motion, she gently suctions out about 4lbs worth of stubborn fatty deposits per session.
