Chemical Peels

Facial Rejuvenation with Chemical Peels

Perhaps you have heard of the term “chemical peel.” This type of skin resurfacing procedure uses a chemical solution to peel away the top layers of the skin to a healthier, smoother, and younger-looking state. You may be a candidate for a chemical peel if your skin is showing the signs of uneven skin pigmentation, leathery texture of your facial skin, fine wrinkles, and acne or blemishes. A professionally administered peel can restore tired, aging, and dull skin to a more youthful and vibrant state.

What is a Chemical Peel?

Dr. Kimberly Finder, as a Board-Certified Dermatologist, advises her patients that a chemical peel uses solutions of natural acids (AHA, TCA, and phenol) to improve and smooth the skin texture by removing the damaged outer layers. These acids must be carefully adjusted and applied to the skin to achieve the desired results based on skin types. The most popular acids used in chemicals peels are:

  • Alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) are the mildest peel formulas and are often referred to as a “lunchtime” peel. This peel only penetrates the outer layer of the skin resulting from a gentle exfoliation. Dr. Finder uses AHAs peels to refresh the skin on the face, neck, chest, and hands.
  • Trichlorocetic Acid (TCA) or glycolic acid is used for medium to deep depth peeling. This acid penetrates the skin to the middle layers or more deeply, based on concentration. TCA is effective in removing age spots, smoothing out uneven skin tones, moderate skin discoloration, and fine lines and wrinkles. A TCA peel commonly causes a sunburn type of reaction or reddening of the skin.

Dr. Finder advises her patients what type and level of peel is needed to address their skin rejuvenation goals.

What Do Chemical Peels Treat?

Chemical peels remove the outer layer of skin (epidermis). This treats and improves:

  • Fine wrinkles
  • Acne
  • Skin tone
  • Dry skin
  • Dark spots and sun damage
  • Skin texture
  • And more

Things You Should Know About Chemical Peels

Sun exposure must be avoided during the healing process or longer. Dr. Finder will advise you of proper skin care following your chemical peel, including moisturizers, sunscreens, and makeup. A chemical peel should be done by a dermatologist to avoid side effects such as infection and scarring.
