What’s the Difference Between Botox® and Dermal Fillers?

BOTOX® Cosmetic wears the crown as the most popular treatment for cosmetic enhancement and facial rejuvenation in the United States, with dermal fillers right on its heels. Both treatments target facial wrinkles and folds through artistically placed injections, but that’s where their commonalities end. The Face & Body Place is skilled in the art and science of both treatments and we’re ready to help you understand them so you can decide which treatment is best for you.

How BOTOX® Works

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neurotoxin that has safely been used to combat forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet for decades. It blocks nerve impulses to the corrugator and procerus muscles responsible for brow furrows and horizontal forehead lines, effectively freezing the muscles so they don’t react to facial expressions that contribute to skin wrinkles, like squinting and frowning.

How Dermal Fillers Work

Dermal fillers serve a bit of a different purpose. They’re most commonly made of hyaluronic acid molecules of different sizes and consistencies to form a smooth, malleable gel. When injected into areas around the face, they fill in volume lost to age, gravity, or plump hollowed cheeks and thin lips. Different fillers are designed precisely for specific functions. For example, there’s a gel whose consistency is thin and easily spreadable, intended for the delicate tissues beneath the eye to combat under-eye bags and wrinkles, while another filler is thicker and more robust to restore volume in hollowed out cheeks. For nearly any facial aesthetic concern, there’s likely a gel to address it, and The Face & Body Place is well versed in a variety of dermal fillers for maximum impact with the right kind of treatment.

What to Expect of the Injection Results

BOTOX® treatments show visible results within 5-7 days of your treatment, with continued improvement over the following 3 weeks. The effects of the medication last anywhere from 3-5 months, and repeated treatments may last longer as your muscles become accustomed to the effects. Dermal fillers, depending on the specifics of your treatment, can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, and the results are immediately visible from the first treatment.

The right procedure option depends on your goals with your cosmetic enhancement sessions. Dr. Finder will assess your facial structure, your individual goals, and the way you express yourself to propose a treatment plan that will most effectively achieve your desired outcome, without a surprised, frozen, or unbalanced appearance.
