For cosmetic enhancement procedures, one of the foremost concerns is pain. While the phrase, “No pain, no gain,” might be fine for the gym, when talking about delicate areas for laser hair removal like the face, underarms, or bikini line, the less pain the better. At The Face & Body Place, we like our patients to have all the information they can, so let’s talk about the pain of laser hair removal.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
To understand what makes laser hair removal treatments painful, it helps to know exactly how the lasers Dr. Finder uses work. Both our laser hair removal systems are manufactured by Candela, the Alexandrite laser and the ND:YAG laser. Your hair and skin type determines which laser would best work to remove your unwanted hair. The ND:YAG laser is ideal for darker skin tones because it has a longer wavelength capable of looking past the skin pigment to the pigment of the hair follicle. The Alexandrite’s shorter wavelength is better for lighter skin tones. The pigment in the hair is targeted, absorbing the laser energy to destroy the hair follicles, causing them to shed. Because only 30% of our hair is in the active growth phase at a given time, multiple laser hair removal sessions are recommended for complete removal of the hair in the treatment area. Depending on the treatment area the required number of sessions is between 6-12. Thankfully, results for both types of laser are visible after just 2-3 treatments and continue through the rest of your treatment plan.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Every patient’s pain tolerance is different, as is the sensitivity in the varying parts of the body. There are many ways patients have described how laser energy feels on their skin. Some say it’s like small zaps, quick pinches, or a rubber band snap, and others feel the heat, a slight tingling or burning sensation, or an electric zing. Each pulse is a micro-second, so the discomfort is short-lived before moving on to the next section of the treatment area. After the treatment, the area may feel like you have a slight sunburn for a few days.
We do offer an optional topical anesthetic cream to increase patient comfort which is available for use after your first treatment. While some patients opt to use the cream the majority of our patients find the treatments very tolerable.
Dr. Kimberly Finder and The Face & Body Place team want to make each procedure for our patients as comfortable as possible. We’re happy to answer any concerns you have during your consultation. All you have to lose is unwanted hair.
