How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal treatments of the past have been painful, expensive, and not very reliable. That’s all changed with the Alexandrite or ND:YAG laser hair removal systems by Candela. Before, the color of your hair or pigment of your skin determined how successful laser hair removal was. The hair had to contrast enough in pigment from the skin to be truly effective. With the ND:YAG laser, patients with darker skin tones are candidates because the longer energy wavelength is capable of honing in on the hair pigment regardless of skin contrast. The Alexandrite’s shorter wavelength is ideal for lighter skin tones to minimize the risk of burning.

The hair’s pigment absorbs the laser energy, which destroys hair follicles. These hairs begin to shed, causing dormant follicles to transition into the active phase, wherein the laser can be applied again. Multiple sessions are required to target every hair as it enters the active phase, usually between 6-12, but once this treatment plan is fully executed, few hair follicles will have survived. Your skin is left smooth and hair-free.

Am I a Good Candidate?

If you have unwanted hair on your body (except near the eyes), then the Face & Body Place can help. Because we have 2 types of laser, hair or skin color only determines which laser works best, and does not disqualify patients.

What are Treatment, Results, and Downtime Like?

Previous laser hair removal patients have described their treatments as feeling small zaps, quick pinches, heat, slight tingling, or an electric buzz. Pain is nominal and short-lived, but we offer anesthetic cream for maximum comfort if desired. Downtime is minimal, with a few days of skin sensitivity similar to a sunburn. Patients frequently return to regular activities immediately following treatment.

The results, however, can take some time. Within 1-2 weeks of treatment, those follicles that have fragmented and died off begin to shed. Hair may thicken at first as newly active follicles replace those that have been treated, but after 2-3 treatments, most patients experience visible thinning and continued shedding until most if not all of the follicles are treated. The completion of the treatment regimen leaves behind smooth skin, and Candela research shows Alexandrite and ND:YAG laser patients can successfully remove all but a tiny number of hairs. Because bodies are amazing organisms, it’s possible a small number of new follicles may grow in the future, but they’re easily targeted by a future treatment session or two.
