The amount of time and money we spend on shaving, waxing, and other hair removal methods over a lifetime is staggering. Thousands of dollars and the equivalent of months are spent on hair removal and grooming for both men and women, and for women, hair removal is the most hated of all beauty rituals. So while laser hair removal may seem expensive up front, the overall cost may be less than you expect.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
The pigment in hair is what absorbs the laser energy, taking the heat into the follicle and disrupting its growth phase, which renders the follicle useless. While this typically means darker hair against lighter skin more readily absorbs laser energy for removal, technology has come a long way in helping remove unwanted hair of all types against all skin tones. At The Face & Body Place, we use two types of lasers for hair removal, the Alexandrite and the ND:YAG laser, both manufactured by Candela.
The ND:YAG laser works well for darker toned skin. With a longer wavelength, it reaches past the melanin in the skin to the pigment in the hair, destroying the papilla or the bulb at the base of the follicle. The Alexandrite laser has a shorter wavelength than the YAG laser, making it suitable for lighter skin tones. Hair removal with both lasers will require multiple treatments, between 5-10.
Why multiple treatments? Because at any given time, only 30% of your hair follicles are in the active, or growth, phase, while the remainder are resting or dormant. The treatments are spaced out, with 8-16 weeks between sessions, to allow the dormant follicles to enter the active phase. In this way, the laser technicians at The Face & Body Place can treat newly active follicles with each appointment, so no energy or time is spent targeting hairs that are already dying off. The cumulative effect of hair reduction will be noticeable after 3-4 sessions, and growth will gradually slow to a stop.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?
The American Society of Plastic surgeons averages the cost of laser hair removal at around $430, but this can vary depending on a variety of factors, such as size of treatment area and number of treatments required for your skin tone and hair type. For example, the underarms or bikini line may average as little as $350 while the legs or back may top $800.
Laser hair removal sounds expensive, but when compared to the lifetime cost of razors, waxes, and depilatory creams, it becomes much more reasonable. Beyond monetary savings, the amount of time saved may be of even greater value. The Face & Body Place staff know that paying up front for a lot of treatments may be prohibitive for some, so we offer a variety of financing options so you don’t have to choose between looking and feeling great and your pocketbook. Whether you choose to eliminate the hated chore of daily hair removal, spend your precious time on more fulfilling activities than shaving, restore your confidence by removing unwanted hair, or all three, taking care of yourself is worth it.
