One of the most common questions we get about BOTOX® Cosmetic injections is, “Is it safe?” The more than 7 million BOTOX® treatments performed in 2018 are proof that it is. BOTOX® is derived from Clostridium botulinum, a form of toxin that, if administered in tiny doses, is perfectly safe to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and lines in the forehead and around the eyes.
How Does BOTOX® Work?
The repetitive motion of the corrugator, procerus, and orbicularis oculi muscles is what causes forehead lines, brow furrows, and crow’s feet. BOTOX® combats these by blocking the nerves that prompt those muscles to move, allowing your skin to relax and wrinkles to fade once the repetition of movement is minimized. Dr. Kimberly Finder places a handful of carefully considered injections into the affected muscles, stopping their movement so your skin has a chance to rehydrate and rebuild collagen broken down by your facial expressions.
Am I a Good Candidate?
While BOTOX® is not for everybody, most people tolerate the treatment well, not only to reduce wrinkles, but to treat migraines, and TMJ disorder. Schedule a consultation to see if you’re a candidate.
How Safe is BOTOX®?
While yes, the toxin in BOTOX® medication can be harmful, only 13 cases between its FDA-approval in 1989 and 2003 produced adverse effects, and the majority of those were because of an underlying medical condition of the BOTOX® recipients. In expertly trained, medically certified hands, BOTOX® is one of the safest medications on the market today. It is, however, critical to have the treatment performed by a board-certified physician or medically certified injection specialist. BOTOX’S® popularity has given rise to its availability in unregulated, less safe channels where the medication is diluted or otherwise altered, or it’s administered by inexperienced and uncredentialed practitioners such as beauty salons or at “BOTOX® parties.” The safety and effectiveness of BOTOX® cannot be guaranteed in these environments.

Treatment, Results, and Downtime
Treatments with BOTOX® are quick, usually lasting less than 30 minutes. Our certified injections specialists will assess your facial structure and features, and carefully and thoroughly plan your treatment protocol. Men have different musculature than women, so it’s important to see a practitioner who understands facial anatomy and has the experience to achieve the results you’re looking for.
There is little downtime with BOTOX® injections. Minor side effects are possible, such as injection site tenderness, bruising, swelling, and headache. These are common and typically resolve within a few hours or a day. Your Face & Body Place provider will cover all the risks so you can make the most informed decision possible.
Results with BOTOX® make it all worth it. Within 10-14 days, your facial muscles begin to relax, and while most movement is restricted, some motion is possible, so you’ll still be able to express yourself. Most patients enjoy the benefits of BOTOX® for up to 4 months before maintenance is needed. Repeat patients can often space treatments out even longer.
To ensure your BOTOX® treatment is properly administered by qualified medical professionals, schedule your treatment at The Face & Body Place.
