What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?

One of the primary processes of aging is the breakdown of collagen in the skin. Sun exposure exacerbates this issue, and over time, our skin’s ability to repair and replenish collagen slows. The result is lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, expanded pores, and dull, uneven texture. Microneedling at The Face & Body Place addresses these problems at the source: collagen production.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling works using a fine, pen-like tool with a matrix of fine, sterile needles to create micro-channels in the skin. These controlled injuries are too small to see, but they have a big impact. The undamaged skin between channels acts as a bridge to fill in the gaps microneedling creates with new collagen and elastin. Your body’s healing response rushes to the area, increasing blood flow, creating new skin cells and collagen while removing the damaged and dead cells that dulled your complexion’s clarity and vibrancy. Your skin looks and behaves younger after microneedling because it is younger.

Microneedling is a fantastic treatment for:

  • Acne scarring
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven tone and texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Sun damage
  • Age spots

Am I a Good Candidate?

Ideal candidates for microneedling are not suffering from active skin infections or lesions and have no known wound-healing concerns. A consultation at The Face & Body Place can answer all your questions.

What is the Treatment Like?

Microneedling treatments are relatively quick, lasting about 30 minutes, and they begin with a thorough cleanse and topical numbing cream to maximize your comfort. Your treatment plan is implemented with your customized depth settings, and the microneedling pen tool is moved over your skin at a controlled, even pace. Some treatments can even include Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), using your body’s own growth factors to enhance the healing and repair process. PRP is extracted at the time of your treatment and the plasma is prepared before your treatment begins. Once your micro-channels are created, the PRP is applied to soak into the channels, where those beneficial growth factors improve healing. Repeated treatments spaced about 3 to 4 weeks apart may help you achieve your desired goals. Average patients schedule between 6-8 sessions.

Is There Any Downtime?

Immediately following your microneedling treatment, your skin will be sensitive and reddened, much like after a sunburn, and you may experience some mild swelling. This usually subsides within 24-48 hours. Your activities are not restricted, but you may feel like limiting your social exposure. Your skin may continue to be tender and pink for a few more days.

What Are the Results?

Most patients experience an immediate glow to their skin following treatment, but it takes time to rebuild and repair collagen for full support and skin tightening. Your body also needs time to whisk away the damaged skin cells, which is what lightens sun damage, evens out skin tone, and softens and repairs acne scars. Your peak results are more reliably visible 4-6 weeks following your final microneedling treatment.
